D3 (1.2080) Tool Steel

D3 is a high-carbon, high-chromium (12%) tool steel that provides even higher wear resistance than D2, though with slightly lower toughness. It is designed for applications where sliding wear is the primary concern and mechanical shock is minimal.

D3 tool steel is generally supplied in an annealed and machinable condition, making it suitable for further processing and precision machining. Re-annealing is typically required only when the material has undergone prior forging or has been hardened during toolmaking operations. The annealing cycle should involve slow and uniform heating to approximately 900°C, followed by a soaking period of 3 to 4 hours to ensure structural refinement. The steel should then be furnace cooled gradually to room temperature. For subsequent thermal conditioning, the material may be reheated within the range of 800°C to 1040°C, held again for 3 to 4 hours, and then cooled slowly inside the furnace to maintain optimal softness and machinability.
